This is a quick activity in which students match recipes or medical treatments with their supposed effects. It can be done invididually, in pairs or in groups. I used it in a class on the social roles of Scottish women between 1750 and 1900. The recipes/treatments came from manuals about housewifery, so after completing the activity we discussed how they reflect on women’s familial duties. The activity could also be used in a class about medicine or the history of the body.
